Film Research - S.W.O.T

Strengths
- Very strong controlling idea.
- We can relate to the target audience.
- Horror is a very popular genre.
- The genre is very male dominated.
- There has been an incresing interest in short films thanks to promotion by sundance.

Weakness
- Film may not relate to another audience.
- Short films are restricted to small audience.
- Subject matter is more aimed at males than females.

Opportunities
- Occurs during something simular e.g The belief that the world will end in 2012.
- Coinsides with a film festival.

Threats
- Big film coming out at the same time.
- Competing with loads of student films.
- As well as full mainstream films.
- Resession, people may have less money to fund a film.

The S.W.O.T analysis gives us the opportunity to find out the Strengths, Weaknesses, Oppotunities and Threats of our films and in turn gives us an impression that our film will be a success or not with the audience, and with our initial idea we can evaluate it through the 4 points.

Codes and Conventions of a Short Film

Short films often follow certain codes and conventions which in turn lets the audience know it is in fact, a short film. One of the main codes and conventions would be the most obvious, that it is in fact, short. A short film most of the time will never be longer than 20 minutes max, although our film itself we aim to make it no longer than 7 minutes. Whilst the entire narative is included, e.g. "no part one", or "to be continued".

Our short film could be comnpared to that with an Action genre short film. These types of films are often fast paced but none the less allows for a smooth understandable flow of narrative. Many different cuts will occur and various shot types used rapidly in order to fit everything into the very short space of time provided, but at the same time must include plenty of enigmas to help keep the film create some extreme suspense over the entire film. One of the main themes used in many short films, and also in ours would be violence, if it connotes it with the use of props and weapons, violence definitely helps create suspense and also fear.

In terms of sound, the non diegetic music is often very quite and slowly builds throughout the film to the end which often contains some form of twist or suprise. Also, the music will often relate to what is being shown on screen, one main example is with the short film, About a Girl, the film can be compared to the song which shares the same name, written by Nirvana. One lyric states "I need an easy friend" which straight away could be related to the young girl in the film, who throughout is shown alone, and contantly hoping for the support of her father, who could be known as the "easy friend".

What is a Short Film?

In this blog post I will talk about the History of the Short Film and explain what makes a successful Short Film.

During the 19th Century all films were 'short.' However audiences were so dazed by man's new technological achievement in cinema and were not concerned with the short run time (which would average around 20 minutes.) But as the 20th Century approached, films run times became longer and longer. Consequently films with shorter running times were becoming far less frequent and were dubbed “Short Films” These would normally be inserted before a feature length film and would run before it. These shorts would often involve comedy and Comedians such as Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy would often have short films playing before a feature length film.

Nowadays short films are very popular and have entire festivals dedicated to showing off some of the best and most cutting edge short films.

Evaluation of previous AS Blog

Introduction
My entire group all contributed a considerable amount towards our blog which is in my eyes the key foundation to a successful blog. I have spoken to my group and together we have picked out some key blog posts they we are all proud of.

Above is a story board that Anthony Wilson constructed. The thing that makes this story board different from the rest is that it was created after we finished our filming. Anthony constructed the story board and then we looked back at our own footage and all took note of what we saw. We then as a group combined our notes to form a detailed outline of everything we did in the sequence and why we put it in there. I feel that this helped us a considerable amount because now as we start on our new film we will take more detail into account.
The main reason why this post had such a big impact on the overall project is because we were actually able to see the film from a different point of view other than our own. In our heads we always had how our film would turn out but how it actually did turn out I’m sure my team will agree was completely different.
Although I hold a lot of praise for our blog because we did managed to achieve a lot the only problem I would say was that the lack of team communication caused arguments to break out over who completed which post or who was supposed to do a certain blog, granted we were able to quickly overcome this failure in communication but I feel it never should of happened and we are all partly responsible. Fortunately no one in my team dropped the subject so we are in the same team as we were last year this year, this is an excellent thing because now we can look back at our mistakes and do a better job this time around.
The blog was an in depth insight to the workings of a team creating a film, hence the major importance it has on our grade. There are a few things I would like to change about our previous blog and will ensure that these changes are applied with our current media blog now. Those changes are as follows:
• To list every problem we encounter
Basically, although we encounter countless problems with our film I feel that this is nothing to be ashamed of. For every person in our team this is the first time any of us have produced a film so the fact that we encountered plenty of obstacles and problem is nothing to ignore but we should of embraced it. We would have managed to have a lot more blogs by discussing our problems and on top of that we probably would have resolved them by discussing them more.

• To Film and photograph Absolutely everything

Last year we actually managed to do a brilliant job of this however I still have the feeling we could have done more. There is so much invlo0ved when it comes creating a film and although we produced a substantial amount of blogs I know and my group knows it wouldn’t have been a challenge without blogging categorically everything we encountered

• To introduce a method of blogging that contains opinions.
In order to accomplish a blog that provides information for everyone that reads it to understand everything that is happening throughout our filming process we must be able to portray our own opinions as well as embracing other people’s opinions. We as a group must feel comfortable enough with each other to discuss our own ideas and point out what’s wrong with other ideas without getting aggravated.

In conclusion from what I have learnt from our previous blog myself and my group will take everything that went wrong on board and explore it as much as possible to understand how to avoid it. We will also maintain everything we did well and develop it.

Evaluation of AS film

As a group we were all quite proud of our AS film we created last year. Because all of our group loved thriller films we found ourselves with plenty of good ideas that we incorporated into our own production. Our film was generally well recieved with our peers and overall we got decent marks. There were many things we did right but there were also many things we did wrong. Below is a Skype conversation between me and Anthony evaluating our film. Due to some technical errors the dialogue lags partially at some stages but it only lasts a couple seconds.
